Boating Safety in Alberta.

default

Summer in Alberta means lakes, sunshine, and some fun time on the water. Whether it is cruising on Sylvan Lake, fishing at Lake Newell, or tubing on the Bow River, boating is a cherished part of the season. But every year, what should be a relaxing day in nature, can become a scary accident scene. Serious injuries—and even fatalities—may result from a few moments of distraction or carelessness.

In Alberta, summer boating accidents often involve alcohol, excessive speed, or a no lifejackets. According to the Canadian Red Cross, nearly 90% of people who drown in boating accidents, were not wearing a lifejacket. In many of these cases, the victim was an experienced swimmer who simply did not have time to react, when the boat flipped or crashed.

Consider the recent tragedy at Ghost Lake, where a man drowned after a small watercraft capsized. Witnesses reported that he was not wearing a personal flotation device. These incidents are preventable—and they are happening right here in our province.

Injuries from boating accidents are not just “bumps and bruises.”

Many victims suffer:

  • Traumatic brain injuries from collisions or being thrown overboard;
  • Spinal cord damage from diving into shallow water or impacting with their boats or others;
  • Lacerations and broken bones from propellers or sharp surfaces; or Emotional trauma which affects survivors and witnesses for life.

The aftermath of a boating accident may mean months of rehabilitation, lost income, and lifelong disability. For families, the emotional and financial toll is immense.

Here is how you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe:

  • Always wear a lifejacket—even strong swimmers can’t predict cold-water shock or a sudden capsize;
  • Never drink and boat—alcohol slows reaction time and impairs judgment;
  • Watch your speed—especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas;
  • Check the weather forecast—Alberta’s storms can arrive quickly and without warning; and
  • Use a spotter—when towing skiers or tubers, always have a second person watching.
