On Friday, June 20, 2025, the pathways of Bowness Park in Calgary came alive with laughter, support, and the quiet strength of a community walking—and rolling—together. The Southern Alberta Brain Injury Society (SABIS) hosted its annual Walk & Roll event, a day filled with purpose, celebration, and compassion. And this year, there’s even more to celebrate: SABIS turned 40.
Whether you have walked this path before or attended for the first time, this year’s Walk & Roll was a heartfelt milestone in the organization’s incredible journey of advocacy and support for brain injury survivors and their families.
Behind every step and every turn of a wheelchair at the Walk & Roll is a story—of resilience, recovery, and the ongoing fight for inclusion and support. The Southern Alberta Brain Injury Society has worked tirelessly since 1985 to support survivors of acquired brain injuries, offering everything from advocacy and resources to community integration programs.
Brain injuries are often invisible, but their effects are lifelong and life-changing. Survivors may face challenges with memory, speech, mobility, and mood. Loved ones—partners, children, caregivers—often shoulder overwhelming responsibilities. Events like Walk & Roll not only raise crucial funds but also help remind the community that nobody has to walk this road alone.
This isn’t your average charity walk—it’s a celebration of courage, connection, and community.
This blend of fun and fundraising makes Walk & Roll a standout summer event—and a vital one for the SABIS community.
This year’s Walk & Roll was more than just a fundraiser—it was a birthday bash, too. SABIS celebrated 40 years of service, advocacy, and impact. Four decades of walking beside survivors, fighting for their rights, and building pathways to independence.
In Canada, it is estimated that one person sustains a brain injury every three minutes. Many of these injuries are preventable—in motor vehicle accidents, falls, or sports-related impacts—but once they occur, the path to recovery can be isolating and filled with red tape. SABIS helps bridge that gap with personalized support, helping survivors reclaim their autonomy and find community.
Even if you can’t attend in person, there are still ways to show your support:
- Donate to SABIS through their website at https://sabis.ab.ca/;
- Share this event with friends, family, and colleagues;
- Volunteer your time at future events or offer your skills to the organization; or Advocate for better supports and funding for brain injury services in Alberta.
