Calgary has an increasingly concerning road safety problem. In 2024, twenty-nine (29) people lost their lives—13 of them pedestrians—in fatal traffic crashes — its most significant number of deadly traffic crashes in more than a decade. The Calgary Police Service (CPS)’s last highest annual figure on record was 18 years ago in 2007.
The numbers serve as a “wake-up call” for drivers and pedestrians to be more cautious, as speed, distraction, and pedestrian vulnerability play significant roles in these events.
Rising Risk on Calgary’s Roads
Although everyone shares responsibility for traffic safety, the rising death toll points to an alarming trend. CPS has noted some elements that are contributing factors:
- Speeding: Of the fatal collisions in 2024, 35% of incidents featured speeding issues;
- Distracted Driving: Still a big problem whether texting, reviewing alerts, or changing in-car settings; and
- Pedestrian Safety: Often at high-speed crossings, or unmarked crossroads, many deaths included pedestrians.
These numbers show that more work is required, even with greater awareness programs and stricter rules regarding distracted driving and speed enforcement.
A Call to Care: Advice for Drivers and Walkers
CPS has listed many essential safety precautions that might stop disasters in the future:
For Drivers:
✔ Consistently scan for pedestrians, especially close to junctions and crosswalks;
✔ Drive slower in high-risk regions, especially where speed restrictions top 50 km/h;
✔ Put down the phone; a life is not worth a text or call; and
✔ Before driving forward, make eye contact with pedestrians to be sure they see you.
For Pedestrians:
✔ Cross at “approved crosswalks”—jaywalking raises the possibility of not being spotted; Classification: Personal
✔ Stay vigilant by avoiding phone use, or headphones as distractions; and
✔ On multi-lane roads, where one stopped car does not ensure others will stop, always be especially careful.
Moving forward: An Effort by a Community
The tragic statistics of 2024 should not be just another report; they should be a turning point. While law enforcement plays a role in reducing collisions, safer roads require a collective effort from all road users. With 2025 already recording three (3) fatal collisions by the end of January, Calgary must prioritize road safety, before more lives are lost.
Drivers and pedestrians can help prevent another record-breaking year of road deaths by remaining vigilant, following speed restrictions, and deliberately avoiding distractions.
