As Alberta’s temperatures drop and the winter settles in, it is not just the roads that become treacherous – your windshield can become a hidden hazard if it is not properly maintained. In Alberta, any windshield obstruction that limits your clear view of the road, could land you in trouble with law enforcement, potentially facing fines, or orders for repair under section 80(a) of the Rules of the Road Regulation. And let’s be honest, is a ticket worth the risk to your safety?
Before you rush out the door for your morning commute, or school run, take an extra minute to clear away ice, snow, and/or other obstructions. This is so important as with heavy foot traffic, in school zones and playgrounds, quick reactions and sharp vision are essential.
The transition from warmer months to winter’s chill is always challenging, and your vehicle feels it, too. In particular, your windshield faces added stress during cold weather.
The combination of ice, snow, condensation, and fog compromises visibility, and in our haste to stay on schedule, we might resort to shortcuts that do more harm than good. While clearing your windshield quickly is tempting, the methods you use can either protect or damage this crucial component of your vehicle.
Windshield Care: The Do’s and Don’ts
DON’T
- Pour hot water on your windshield: In a rush to de-ice your car? Avoid splashing hot water on the windshield. The sharp contrast in temperature can lead to cracks, and if you already have a small crack, repeated use of hot water can worsen the situation.
- Blast the windshield with hot air: Like hot water, blowing hot air directly on the windshield can exacerbate existing damage. Warm your car gradually; and use the “defrost function” with patience.
- Use improper tools: Avoid scraping ice with makeshift tools including shovels, or hammers. Stick to ice scrapers and/or brushes designed for the job, and you will not risk damaging the glass.
DO
- Keep your windshield clean: Start with a clear windshield; you will have one less thing to deal with when winter’s elements hit.
- Check your wipers: Replace them at the start of winter and ensure they are in good condition to handle heavy snow and ice.
- Keep washer fluid topped up: Winter driving requires frequent refills to clear your view. A full tank means fewer surprises.
- Fix cracks and chips immediately: Cold weather can turn minor damage, into a significant issue. Ice builds up in tiny cracks, and the expansion from freezing and thawing can shatter the windshield. Do not let a small chip evolve into a full-blown catastrophe.
