On May 28th, 2017, Pipella Law participated in the 2017 Scotia Bank Calgary Marathon Charity Challenge—Canada’s longest-running annual marathon—on behalf of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Alberta.
In honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary, Team SCI AB hoped for 50 participants to raise $50,000—60 people ran, walked, wheeled, and hand-cycled for the team, easily coming within the fundraising goal. Members of Team SCI AB participated in every event the marathon offered including the:
- 5 km;
- 10 km;
- 21.1 km;
- 42.2 km; and
- 150 km.
Special congratulations to Brian Martin, who completed the 150 km race for Team SCI AB. Brian started on May 27th, and finished his journey 13 hours and 40 minutes later. Way to go, Brian!
SCI Alberta: Empowering Independence
The funds raised during the Charity Challenge by Team SCI AB will go directly to SCI Alberta. Since 1961, SCI Alberta has been helping Canadians with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities live independent, fulfilling lives. “Whether it be assisting a newly spinal cord injured child or adult, lobbying for better public transportation, or helping to create a more inclusive community, SCI Alberta embraces the approach that there is more than one way.”
Services offered by SCI Alberta include, but are not limited to:
- Affordable housing registry;
- Fitness, wellness, and nutrition guidance;
- Information services;
- Peer support; and
- Community development and systemic change initiatives.
