Tara D. Pipella, Q.C. Honoured with Queen’s Counsel Appointment

 On April 6, 2022, Tara D. Pipella, QC, owner and operator of Pipella Law, was one of 144 Alberta lawyers appointed to Queen’s Counsel—an honour reserved for lawyers who have made particular contributions to the legal profession or public life in Alberta.   Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, the Honourable Tyler Shandro, stated this about the lawyers appointed to Queen’s Counsel in 2022:   “(t)he appointees receiving the Queen’s counsel designation this year help set the standard for service to Albertans through our justice system. Their hard work is vital to providing essential legal services that make a difference in the lives of so many in our province, and it is a pleasure to grant them this well-deserved honour.”

Queen’s Counsel

According to the Government of Alberta, “(t)he history of the Queen’s Counsel designation traces its origins to the Elizabethan era in England, with Upper Canada admitting its first appointees in 1841.” Both the criteria and process for the selection of Queen’s Counsel are rigorous; in addition to the mandatory requirement of having been called to the Bar for at least 10 years, potential appointees must demonstrate: 
  • exceptional competence;
  • sound ability; 
  • distinguished service (including as mentors to junior members of the Bar); 
  • professionalism; 
  • recognized expertise;
  • the trust, confidence, and respect of others (including fellow lawyers and the Bench);
  • contributions to the administration of justice;
  • contributions to the community; and
  • contributions to the legal community.
In Alberta, candidates are screened by a committee of judicial officials, legal representatives, and representatives of the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, and his department. Appointment recommendations are then submitted to the Minister for consideration, with the final list then submitted to Cabinet for consideration and approval by the Lieutenant-Governor.
